How to Play Mp3 Continuously From Thumb Drive Windows 10
I am asking my question again because I have not received any replies and was wondering if it was because nobody understood it?
I'm basically asking how I can play music on my computer from a usb flash drive using Windows Media Player. I can get the contents of the flash drive to come up in WMP but I'm unable to drag any tracks into the play list so I can play them. I want to be able to shuffle a list of songs in the play list and then listen to them - on my computer, laptop.

Hi there - I was away last week and missed your original post... best way is to open the flash drive in 'This PC' (or 'Computer'. Select any music files/folder in 'explorer' (rather than wmp) and you can right click it and select 'Play' or 'add to WMP list'. You can shuffle the list by clicking the icon (crossed arrows) on the WMP control bar.

Hi Rick. Thanks for your advice. I persisted for a while and finally got it to work. The problem is that when I right click on the folder/folders I don't always get the option to open or transfer the files to Windows Media Player play list. When I right click on the folder/s I get one of two different opening boxes only one of which includes the WMP option. It's a bit hit and miss although I usually get the right box when I click on the folder at the top of the list. I just keep re clicking until the box with the WMP option box comes up.
And that's where I was getting confused, I hope your not :-). I don't why that happens. Perhaps you could offer an explanation?

Thanks for the update... Because flash drives tend to be connected/disconnected the folders behave differently to those permanently on your pc. The computer will automatically 'customize' folders by the majority of their contents so if a folder contains all music files it can be seen under properties as customized for music (screenshot below) - then the option to play or add to playlist will appear automatically.
If your usb drive contains mainly music files go to it in 'This PC' right click and select Properties - Customize tab.
Select 'Music' from the 'Optimize' dropdown and check 'apply to subfolders' and OK - then you should always get the play option. (This may need resetting after a period of non-use or a major OS update though) - R.

Thank you Rick the information you supplied was very helpful. I have an apology to make though. I store a lot of music on flash drives but when I initiated this question I was in fact referring to my Toshiba external hard drive, silly mistake
The majority of the folders on the external drive are photos and that would help explain the problem. I have 235GB of space currently used on it and most of that is photos although I have 75GB of music. From what you have said I gather that would make it difficult for the computer to customize it's behaviour. As we previously discussed when I right click on the music folders it has difficulty deciding what type of folder it is and gives me different options for the same folders. I've found some times if I "play around" right clicking and opening and shutting folders (music) I will eventually get the option I require to copy the files to WMP play list.

No problem - you can apply that setting on your Toshiba and it should stick... I also use a Tosh EHD - I keep the main folders on it similar to the pc (so Docs Music Photos Video) and set the main folders under 'customize' accordingly, as detailed in the previous post.
An EHD is more easily managed than a flash drive because the contents tends to be stable where as most users are constantly altering flash drive contents.
